When affiliates in Telegram chats ask «which cloaking service should I use», they usually do not mean software to download but a cloud platform: you add a small snippet of code to your landing page, and the decision on every visit is made on the service side. Below is what this model is, what parts it consists of, what you pay for and what you should not expect from it.
If you are not yet sure what cloaking is in the first place, start with the basics in what is cloaking. This article is about the service as a product.
What is a cloaking service, in simple terms
A cloaking service (also called a cloaker or cloaking software) is a cloud system for filtering and routing ad traffic. For every click on an ad link, within a fraction of a second, it:
- receives the visit data from the code on your page;
- checks the network, device, browser, country, the ad platform's click ID and behavior;
- decides who sees the offer and who gets a neutral page (the White Page);
- writes the decision and its reason to the log.
The key word is «cloud». The check logic, bot address databases and lists of data centers and proxies do not live on your hosting but with the service. It updates them itself, for all customers at once. All you do is tune the rules for the campaign and watch what happens.
Terms. An offer is an advertiser's product or deal; the affiliate network pays you for a target action on it. A White Page is the neutral page for filtered visitors. A flow is the settings of one campaign: where to send people, whom to filter out, and what to show the filtered visitors.
What a cloaking service is made of
From the outside every service looks the same: a dashboard, a «create flow» button, a snippet to paste. The difference is what sits behind the dashboard. A full platform usually has several layers.
| Layer | What it does | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | A JS tag or PHP file on your site sends the visit data | Determines how fast and reliable the decision is |
| Signals | Network, ISP, country, device, browser traits, click IDs | Without good signals the filter is guessing |
| Databases and lists | Data center, proxy and VPN addresses, previously caught bots | Bots rotate addresses, databases go stale within weeks |
| Decision engine | Order of checks and a trust score from all signals combined | Decides who gets to see the offer |
| Log | The reason behind every decision | Without it you cannot find a filter error |
| Pages | Offer, pre-landers, White Page, how traffic is split between them | Defines what each visitor sees |
| Tracker | Clicks, conversions, spend, profit, postbacks | Shows whether the campaign makes money |
A homemade script usually covers the first two or three layers. Everything else is the reason people pay for a service.
Signals and databases: the service's real work
You cannot tell a human from a bot by a single trait. The service combines dozens of signals: whether the address belongs to a hosting company or a residential ISP, whether the browser time zone matches the IP country, whether the browser executes JavaScript, whether there are signs of automation, whether the visit carries the platform's click ID. How this works is covered in detail in VPN, proxy and data center IP detection and headless browsers and browser fingerprinting.
Databases are the hardest part to replicate on your own. Bots and spy tools constantly change subnets and providers. A service that sees traffic from many customers spots a new bot address before it reaches your campaign.
The decision log: what separates a service from a black box
A filter errs both ways: it lets some bots through and sometimes blocks real people. The second error stays invisible until you look for it. That is why a good service shows a clear reason for every click («VPN or proxy blocked», «Country not allowed», «Search or platform crawler») plus a visit card with the network and device. How to read these reasons is explained in why a click went to the White Page.
Cloaking service or your own script: what is the difference
You can find or write a PHP cloaking script in an evening. It will look at the country and the user agent and send the visitor to one of two pages. The trouble starts a couple of weeks later.
| Your own script | Cloud service | |
|---|---|---|
| Bot and network databases | Whatever you found yourself, never updated | Updated by the service all the time |
| Browser checks | Usually none | Yes: JavaScript, automation signs |
| Decision reason | You write the logs yourself, if at all | For every click in the log |
| Tracking and money | A separate tool | Often built in |
| Maintenance | Your time for every update | Included in the subscription |
| Control | Full | Within the service's settings |
Your own script makes sense when traffic is small and the bots are primitive. Once automated browsers on residential proxies start hitting your links, maintaining the checks becomes a job of its own, and a service usually costs less than your time. Who needs a cloaking service and what for
The term «cloaking» comes from affiliate marketing, but filtering helps anyone who pays for clicks.
- Affiliates and media buyers, so that bots and auto-clickers do not eat the budget and spy tools do not steal the funnel. Protecting creatives and landing pages is covered in protection from spy tools.
- Teams and agencies, to see money by every buyer, source and offer in one place. How to set up access is explained in affiliate marketing as a team.
- Anyone buying push, pop and native traffic, where the share of junk placements and bots is especially high. More in push and pop traffic.
- Advertisers with ordinary e-commerce, as an anti-bot layer against click fraud and for clean statistics. See click fraud protection.
All these tasks have one thing in common: the filter cuts off untargeted and automated traffic and lets the real buyer through quickly and invisibly.
Cloaking services and ad platform policies
Service ads rarely mention this, so let us say it plainly. Ad platforms (Meta, Google, TikTok, Yandex and others) prohibit showing their ad review different content from what the user will see. In Google's policies this falls under «circumventing systems»; other platforms word it differently, but the substance is the same. The penalty is an account suspension, often together with every linked account, payment method and domain. A detailed breakdown is in circumventing systems in Google Ads.
Three honest conclusions follow:
- A service does not make an ad allowed. If the offer or creative is prohibited by the platform, a filter will not fix that. What is allowed and how to get permission for restricted categories is covered in restricted ad categories.
- A service does not guarantee your account will not be banned. The platform's decision depends on account history, payment, creatives, domain, offer and user complaints. A «100% ban-proof» promise is a reason to be wary, not to buy.
- The legitimate value of filtering is real without any violation. Filtering bots and click fraud, protecting the funnel from copying, clean statistics and revenue tracking are jobs a filter does when the ad and the page comply with the platform's rules.
Responsibility for ad content always lies with the advertiser, not with the tool.
What working with a cloaking service looks like
The path from sign-up to the first filtered click is similar across cloud services.
- Create a flow. Set the offer, the traffic source and the page for filtered visitors.
- Choose the rules. Geo, devices, campaign hours, how strict the network and browser checks are.
- Connect the site. Put the JS tag as the first line in the landing page's
<head>, or upload the PHP file to your hosting. Details in how to connect a cloaker to your site. - Verify the integration. The service should detect the code on the page, and your test visit should appear in the log.
- Launch traffic and read the log. The first days matter most: the distribution of reasons shows whether a rule is cutting real people.
- Connect the postback. The affiliate network reports conversions, and you see profit for every slice.
Step-by-step setup is covered in cloaker setup.
Tip. Do not judge a service by how much it filters out. There is no single norm for the pass rate to the offer: paid traffic with a verified click ID can have a high pass rate, and that is fine. What should worry you is a very low pass rate: it means the filter is cutting real people along with the bots.
How the ArtisanClo cloaking service works
ArtisanClo is a cloud service for filtering and routing ad traffic with a built-in tracker. Your site stays yours: you connect it with a JS tag on the page or a PHP file on your server, and for WordPress there is a plugin that installs the same PHP method. We do not host customer sites or domains.
What is inside:
- Flows with a choice of traffic source: the checks adapt to Facebook, Google, TikTok, native ads and other platforms, with a strictness level on top: «Soft», «Balanced» or «Strict».
- A reason for every click, one of dozens of plain-language labels, and a visit card with the network, device and the checks that fired.
- A shared bot list: an address confidently caught as a bot in one flow gets the White Page in every flow on the service.
- Shadow mode when connected through the PHP file: every visitor goes to the offer, and the log shows whom the filter would have blocked. That way you test a rule before it starts cutting traffic.
- «Diagnostics» replays past visits through the current settings and shows how much traffic each filter cuts.
- White Page: your own URL or a ready-made page from the design catalog for your niche.
- Tracker: clicks, leads, sales, spend, profit and ROI, postbacks from affiliate networks and conversion sending to ad platforms. More on tracking in affiliate tracker.
- Team: roles with permissions per section, projects, guest links to reports.
The dashboard is available in seven languages, and payment is in cryptocurrency. The full list is on the features page, plans are on the pricing page. There is a free trial that opens up the whole product.
Key takeaways
- A cloaking service is a cloud platform that decides on every visit whether to show the offer or the White Page, and explains the decision.
- Inside: the connection, signals, constantly updated databases, a decision engine, a log and, most often, a tracker.
- What sets a service apart from a homemade script: fresh databases, browser checks, a log of reasons and revenue tracking.
- A service does not get around ad platform rules and does not guarantee you will never be banned: its honest value is filtering bots, click fraud and spy tools, clean statistics and protecting your funnel.
